You search for "free PC cleaner", download one, run the scan and the result is dramatic: "1,284 problems found!". Then you click "Fix" and discover that fixing requires the Pro version. It is a common pattern, and it leaves the impression that real cleaning always costs money.

It does not have to be that way. Here is what a good free cleaning program must do, and what should make you suspicious.

What a good cleaning program must do

  • Clean real junk files: temporary files, caches, already-installed updates, Recycle Bin, error reports.
  • Find leftovers of uninstalled programs, telling safe ones from doubtful ones.
  • Find duplicates and large files, comparing content and not just names.
  • Manage startup programs, explaining what they are and what you can disable.
  • Protect you from mistakes: restore point, the ability to undo, no immediate permanent deletion.

Signs that should make you suspicious

  • Inflated numbers: thousands of "problems" that are actually harmless cookies or registry entries.
  • Free scan, paid cleaning: if the program cleans nothing without paying, it is not free.
  • Ads and offers during installation: browser toolbars, trial antivirus, search engines changed without asking.
  • Exaggerated promises: "300% faster PC" is not a realistic result.
  • Aggressive registry cleaning: blindly deleting thousands of keys can break programs and Windows.

What about Windows built-in tools?

Windows already has some useful tools: Disk Cleanup, Storage Sense, Task Manager for startup, SFC and DISM for repair. They work, but they are scattered across different parts of the system, some require terminal commands and none of them looks for leftovers of uninstalled programs or duplicate music and videos.

PC Nuovo: everything free, for real

PC Nuovo was created to be the simple answer to this search: one program, completely free, with no Pro version, no ads and no hidden offers during installation. It does deep cleaning, finds zombie files, duplicates, duplicate music and videos, large files, broken browser bookmarks, manages Windows startup and repairs the system.

It does not show inflated numbers: it tells you how many GB you can really free, item by item. And anything it removes from your files goes to Quarantine first, from which you can restore it with one click. It works on Windows 10 and 11, in English and Italian.

Cleaning is not enough: protect your PC

A cleaning program is not an antivirus. It frees space and speeds up your computer, but it does not block viruses, ransomware and scams. After cleaning, the most useful thing you can do for your PC is to have serious, up-to-date protection.
