The drive C bar has turned red, Windows warns that space is almost gone and updates no longer install. It is one of the most common problems, and the culprit is almost never your photos or documents: it is files that Windows and programs pile up on their own, without telling you.
Why drive C fills up by itself
Windows keeps a copy of every installed update, browsers save gigabytes of images from the sites you visit, programs leave temporary files they never delete. After a major update, Windows also keeps the entire previous installation in the Windows.old folder, which can exceed 20 GB.
Where to recover space, in order of safety
- Temporary files: they can always be deleted, Windows recreates them when needed.
- Windows Update cache: already-installed updates are no longer needed.
- Browser and graphics card caches: they rebuild themselves, at most the first load is a bit slower.
- Error reports and dump files: created when a program crashes, they can weigh several GB.
- Recycle Bin: check what is inside before emptying it.
- Windows.old: delete it only if your PC works well, because afterwards you cannot go back to the previous version of Windows.
The hidden file as big as your RAM
If you use hibernation, Windows keeps a file on drive C as large as a good part of your RAM. On a PC with 16 GB of RAM it can take over 6 GB. If you never use hibernation, disabling it frees that space immediately.
Component cleanup: the GB nobody finds
The WinSxS folder contains old versions of Windows components replaced by updates. It must never be deleted by hand, but Windows has a dedicated cleanup function that safely removes superseded versions. On a PC a few years old it can free several gigabytes.
Find large files and duplicates
After cleaning system files, look at your own files: forgotten videos in Downloads, disk images of programs already installed, old backups, the same photo folder copied twice. A list of the largest files and a duplicate search often recover more space than everything else.
Do it all in a few clicks, for free
PC Nuovo analyses the drive and shows you, item by item, how much space you can recover: temporary files, updates, caches, Recycle Bin, old installations, hibernation, Windows components, large files and duplicates. It is free, has no Pro version or ads, and anything it removes from your files goes to Quarantine first, from which you can always restore it.
Keep at least 15% free
To work well, Windows needs free space: at least 15% of drive C. Below that threshold the system slows down, updates fail and the risk of errors grows. A cleanup every two or three months is enough to never get there again.
