A question we get often: "I can only buy one, which should it be?" The answer is not always the same, but the rule for deciding is.
Start from what they do
An antivirus defends the device: it blocks malicious software, stops ransomware before it encrypts your files, and removes what already got in.
A VPN defends the connection: it encrypts traffic, hides your IP address, and makes what you do unreadable to anyone sharing your network.
They are two different doors into the same house.
The practical rule
If you mostly use your computer at home, start with the antivirus. Your home network is reasonably safe, while your files, photos and documents are the one thing you cannot buy again.
If you work away, travel or use public Wi-Fi, start with the VPN. On a shared network the risk is someone reading or intercepting your traffic, and an antivirus can do nothing about that.
When you need both
Some situations leave no choice:
- you bank from your phone while out and about;
- you work with company documents off-site;
- you have children browsing and downloading;
- your credentials have already been stolen once.
The option that usually costs less
Buying the two products separately costs far more than one suite including both. Surfshark One and NordVPN's higher plans combine VPN and malware protection; Kaspersky Premium includes the VPN inside the security suite.
Before paying two subscriptions, compare the price of a single package: you almost always win. ## Three practical examples
Mark, an office worker, uses his home PC for banking, email and family photos. He rarely takes the laptop out and does not use public Wi-Fi. For him the priority is the antivirus: the main risks are scam emails, infected attachments and ransomware.
Julia, a sales rep, often works from cafés, hotels and trains. She uses her phone for everything, including company documents. For her the priority is the VPN, plus anti-phishing protection on the phone.
The Smith family has two PCs, four smartphones and two tablets. The kids download games and apps. Here one product is not enough, and the cheapest choice is a suite covering every device with antivirus and VPN together.
What to do anyway, for free, right now
Even before buying anything, there are free steps that greatly reduce the risk:
- Update your operating system, browser and apps.
- Turn on Microsoft Defender on Windows if you have nothing else: it is free and already installed.
- Turn on two-step verification for email, banking and social media.
- Do not reuse passwords across sites.
- Back up important photos and documents to an external drive or the cloud.
Mistakes people make on a tight budget
- Choosing a free VPN: many fund themselves by collecting and selling your data, the opposite of what you want.
- Downloading a "free" antivirus from ads: these are often unwanted programs or outright scams.
- Paying monthly: it is the most expensive way to buy both antivirus and VPN. Annual and multi-year plans cost much less per month.
In short
At home, start with the antivirus; away from home, start with the VPN; with many devices, choose a suite that includes both. And in every case compare the total price, renewal included.
The free quiz tells you in a minute whether an antivirus is enough in your case, whether you need the VPN, or whether the full suite is the better deal.
